Not now, Tom. Your ship is sliding out of the stream. The

exit is going to fling it into back space, love, rip it apart. Pay

attention.

“Did you fall into the stream?”

Not exactly. Tom, please concentrate. You’re losing the

ship.

“I already lost….”

Tom!

Sharp pain smacked me in the head.

Pay attention!

“Shit! What the hell, Briak!” My chair’s anchors groaned

under the stress of the tilting deck. I strained to see through

the fog of stream daze. Marlin was crumpled against the far

bulkhead, and Toby crouched under a shower of sparks,

shielding Missy’s prone body with his own. His sweater

smoldered from a dozen tiny coals. A bit of console swung

down from overhead, spraying out another glittering array of

green and gold sparks. The ship tilted again, and everything

and everyone not holding on tight enough catapulted toward

the far bulkhead. The console crashed back into place.

Marlin came to rest against the foot of my chair with a groan.

I grabbed tight to the armrests, to the stream. “Briak! Don’t

let go!”

I’m here, Tom.

The warmth of his touch cupped my face, and I swear

the deep brown of his eyes, the angles of his face, the

fullness of his lips—it all came back, like he’d never been

gone.

Give me the ship, Tom. I’ll get you out.

“The coordinates.”

I’ve got them. Trust me.

“I’ve never trusted you, asshole.” I relinquished hold of

the stream and the ship’s controls to the voice in my head.
